Posh Parkas

The next few months will be chiller than ever so why look drab and shapeless in your winter wares. Parkas with a cinched waist can keep a girl looking flirty and fun. Here are a few of my favorites:

1. Tall Fur-lined Parka Jacket, Topshop

2. Parajumpers Kodiak Parka in Red, Stanwells

3. ‘Howenda’ parka by Malene Birger, Farfetch

4. Brown Long Sleeve Drawstring Waist Zipper Pockets Coat, SheInside

5. H&M Parka, H&M

Makeup Tip #1

I was very excited about my first internship in the fashion world. Clothes, jewelry, shoes, bags- these are all things that I gravitate towards.  And so naturally, working in this industry would be a good fit. On my first day, I woke up super early because I was so excited and could not believe that I was actually working in the beauty industry, a childhood dream come true. I wanted to take my time getting ready. And I did.

I took about 30 minutes on my makeup. I’m not staying that it should’ve taken 30 minutes. Maybe 15. But it was still a full face look. Moisturizer, foundation, concealer,  eyeliner, about 5 eye shadows, a lip tint. I even filled in my brows. But, there was something missing. MASCARA.

Now, I know what I should’ve done. My usually 4 coats: two not waterproof and 2 top coats waterproof. But I didn’t.

“It is Summer,” I thought.

“You will be fine without it,” I thought.

WRONG. NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER leave the house without waterproof mascara. I was literally at my internship for four hours and before going home I went into the bathroom looked in the mirror and saw this:

AHHHH!

What an interesting first impression. Unfortunately, I am not  Katy Perry. If so, maybe this look would fly… For a photo shoot or television. I mean let’s be real. If I saw someone walking around like that I would think they were crazy? (I know you are nodding your head yes.)  I LOOKED CRAZY.

So the next time I’m looking for a smudged makeup I am going to attempt something like Aussie beauty Samantha Harris:

Wish me luck. I know I need it.

One PRactical Tip

I have been meaning to write about PR for sometime now. But, every time I have something to say I am unsure. This piece I am very sure about… and I think it is pretty hilarious.

So, I had already graduated from college and realized that I still didn’t really know what I wanted to do with the rest of my life… Later to learn, that most people are never really sure what they want to do with the rest of their life. One thing I did know was that I like to write. Hence, this blog, and another and another. Well, after much deliberation I decided that I wanted to go back to school, which I did- and then that I wanted to work in PR.

Public Relations. The name just sounded cool. I thought I knew what I was getting into. And was sure that I was going to enjoy every minute of it, especially since it would be so different from working at Starbucks. It was. And I love/hated every minute of it. I stumbled into my first internship through connecting with customers at work. I was talking to a woman about my degree and she proceeded to tell me that she was the Director of Communications for the Seattle Symphony and would love to have an intern in her office- I couldn’t believe that she made up a position for me. They had not had an intern in years and here I was at the right place, the right time. It had to have been God’s way of telling me to quit Starbucks immediately and sprint into the world of PR. And I took that leap of faith.

The only thing I remember about my first day was that I was wearing sky high heels. It was my assumption about the PR world… I think it stems from too many episodes of The Hills (thank you, Heidi) and Mad Men. I only came in for a meet and greet but as we sat down at the table I realized I was super dressed up. This was a casual place- no heels, just flats, and people sitting at desks typing furiously. But, no one mentioned it so I didn’t feel too out of place. When the meeting was over and the Director of Communications walked me to the elevator. In a moments time, just as I walk into the elevator and turn she glances over at me and says, “Heels are a good idea sometimes, but some days you will do a lot of running.” I was mortified. She meant it in the most sincere and sweetest way. I trusted her knowledge and the over 20 years experience she had in the field. And, of course, she was right.

Now I practice running in heels.
